August, 2003, saw me frantically getting Betty and Bam Bam ready for another trek to the Black Rock Desert. It's an 1,800 mile drive, approximately 33 hours at Airstream towing speed. It is grueling, but in some ways it is becoming routine, as best exemplified by the stays in the same Wally World parking lots as last year.
My friend, Phil (above left), joined me, as did Jean Phillipe (above right), who came from France by way of a local group called the Burning Chicagoans. After final provisioning in Winnemucca on Monday morning, we pulled onto the playa that afternoon. It was nice to be home again.
I shot with the Lomo again this year, along with a cheap flash camera for night time. Most day images are from the Lomo, along with all non-flash night images. I have become much more accustomed to its capabilities than I was last year, and I am much happier with the results.
